tribute to women of color

mission statement

A Tribute to Women of Color (ATWOC) is an organization, open to women of all ethnic groups, which strives to identify and address educational, political, health, family and social issues. The organization focuses on improving the quality of life and spiritual development for all women.

history

In 1992, a Tribute to Women of Color was an idea that emerged from the YWCA Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Racial Justice Committee, which was seeking ways to bridge a diverse community. Committee member Margurite Askew conceived the idea of an award event similar to those sponsored by YWCA's in other parts of the county. The organizing committee consisted of 63 woman from culturally and socio-economically diverse backgrounds from all areas of the county.  The committee did not have a budget so it looked to its community for financial donations. The co-sponsorship of the YWCA, Anne Arundel Medical Center, and Nationwide Insurance and Financial Services enabled the group to hold its first luncheon in March of 1993. Three Community Awards were presented and three Future Leaders received scholarships. The original sponsors have now been joined by many other individuals and organizations who provide financial and scholarship support. Today, a Tribute to Women of Color has over 30 active members working hard to honor community women and to award scholarships to highly deserving young women of color.

In 2005, over $300,000 in scholarship was awarded to young women of color.
